Results of Our Efforts

We are proud to list the following examples of the many tangible outcomes of the Center’s work.

  • Negotiated a consensus agreement between the environmental community and the oil industry regarding the need for an improved leasing program for the Outer Continental Shelf and presented this agreement in testimony to the US Congress
  • Created an Off-Shore Oil Development Plan for the Bering Sea which reflected the interests of the oil industry, the environmental community, the commercial fishing industry and Alaskan natives
  • Guided Wal-Mart in the development of 3 environmental demonstration stores. The roll-out of a single feature of these stores, the skylight/dimming system combination is now saving Wal-Mart $16 Million/year in energy costs.
  • Lead a coalition of environmentalists and members of the golf industry through a one-year process that resulted in the publication and adoption of a set of "Environmental Principles for Golf Courses in the United States." Over 20 organizations have endorsed the principles. Over 26,000 copies have been distributed and are in active use.
  • Developed a program for the US Golf Industry to monitor the quantitative and qualitative impacts of golf course development on the environment
  • Created an Environmental Charter for the North American Telecommunications Industry with input from industry, environmentalists, academics and others. The charter was signed and acknowledged at the United Nations in New York.
  • Launched a process which led to the re-negotiation of Navajo coal leases and the development of corresponding environmental stipulations
  • Brokered a settlement between the Sierra Club and Coors regarding water quality violations. The agreement called for directing the settlement moneys into the restoration of Clear Creek, rather than into government coffers.
  • Created and managed a joint research project between the US and the former Soviet Union that actively monitored boreal forests and studied the relationship between overall forest health and global climate change
  • Produced an environmental code of ethics for the marketing and advertising industry
  • Aided in the conversion of the New York City taxi fleet to alternative fuels
  • Created a stand-alone recycling center at the Lawrence, Kansas Wal-Mart that today recycles nearly 2500 Tons of 15 different materials a year
  • Fostered the creation of the multi-stakeholder Clear Creek Watershed Improvement Initiative in Golden, Colorado
  • Applied the Environmental Principles for United States Golf Courses to the renovation of the Presidio Golf Course in San Francisco
  • Developed sustainable development principles that are guiding the redevelopment of the 7 square mile Stapleton International Airport site
  • Created the educational content that is the basis for Wal-Mart’s 3 "environmental education centers" located in their eco-stores in Lawrence, Kansas; Moore, Oklahoma; and City of Industry, California
  • Brought the US ski industry and the environmental community to Vail, Colorado for a discussion which launched a national program to increase environmental considerations in ski area management
